REPAYING YOUR HELP DEBT

There is no interest charged on a VET FEE HELP loan, however the loan is indexed each year in accordance with the Higher Education Support Act 2003. In addition to tuition fees, the Government charges a loan fee of 20% which is added to the total debt. The loan fee does not count towards your FEE-HELP limit.

You won’t have to start paying back your loan until you start earning over the loan re-payment threshold, which is $54,869 for the 2016-2017 financial year. The debt you incur through VET FEE-HELP is a real debt and may affect your credit rating and borrowing capacity. You may wish to seek independent financial advice prior to applying for a VET FEE-HELP loan.

CENSUS DATE
A census date is the last day you can withdraw without incurring the cost or debt for that unit of study. Providers set their own census dates and will provide you with these details. You will receive an invoice prior to each census date.

FEE-HELP BORROWING LIMIT
Students eligible for VET FEE-HELP and FEE-HELP can borrow up to the FEE-HELP limit. For 2016, the FEE‑HELP limit is $99,389 for most students. For students undertaking medicine, dentistry and veterinary science courses (as defined in the Higher Education Support Act 2003) the FEE‑HELP limit is $124,238. The FEE‑HELP limit is a lifetime limit and is not reset or ‘topped up’ by any repayments that you make. The FEE‑HELP limit is the total amount available to eligible students under both the FEE‑HELP and VET FEE‑HELP loan schemes. This means that any amount you borrow under either FEE‑HELP or VET FEE‑HELP will reduce your FEE‑HELP balance until you have reached the FEE‑HELP limit.
